We were a little freaked out to find out today is Friday the 13th...not sure why we didn't realize that until now, but we didn't. So what else could go wrong?
Actually after yesterday we had a very uneventful and enjoyable day. We spent the morning dealing with the roller furling issue which we think we have fixed. We had to unfurl the jib (the front sail) while tied to our mooring buoy, then lower the jib and inspect the furling mechanism. The halyard was wrapped around the top of the forestay (the thing the jib is hooked onto at the front of the boat). Dad covered the thing in wd40, we untangled the halyard and then hoisted the jib again. Lindsay and I helped mom feed the sail through the "slots" as dad hoisted the sail. We were able to get the furling to work again, so hopefully we won't have more issues with that.
Next we had to go customs, immigration and port authority - and yes, when you come into the Atlanta airport it all seems like the same thing, but in these little countries they are all separate offices and you have to go to each one in the right order. It literally takes half the day.
After leaving customs, we were finally able to walk around Nevis. Everyone here is so nice. There aren't a bunch of cruise ships that come here so everyone loves visitors. We went to the Alexander Hamilton museum (did you know that he was born here?).
We had lunch at Friendly ' s and met our new friend Winston (see photo). We had local food - mom and dad had mutton roti (that's lamb). The rest of us stuck with more normal stuff like grilled chicken and jerk pork. It was all actually really good. We were relieved when a health department van pulled up and got out to pick up take out from there, so we figured we were ok!
We walked around town a bit and went to the Super foods to get more provisions for the boat. We are out of stuff like peanut butter and crackers (a staple while sailing) and dad needed more juice for his 6-4-4 drink (6 parts rum, 4 parts gingerale, and 4 parts fruit juice) with a lime of course.
We ended the day at Sunshine's beach bar, one of the coolest beach bars we've been to. They have flags from all over and even had a Duke flag (but no Boston College flag, so we will need to bring them one next time). We played a little football on the beach and had dinner (ribs, chicken and conch) local soda (Ting) and mom and dad had a killer bee (rum drink). We are excited to explore the island more tomorrow and plan to have one more night here in Nevis.
As I type this we are waiting on dad to watch Frozen because he had never seen it. It is one of the movies we brought with us. We went to plug it in and now the stereo is not working - it is always something. The electrical stuff has been a problem on this boat since the first day. It is really frustrating. I know if this were dad's boat he would have everything perfect and know how to fix it if it went bad...but it is really hard trying to figure stuff out that other people screwed up.
He figured it out, so I'm off to watch Frozen...ta ta for now!
Arden this is awesome to read! Tell your mom that I see her Christmas Card photo... The one of you 3 is absolutely wonderful!!
